Current Volunteer & Intern Opportunities

RECEPTIONIST/OFFICE SUPPORT FOR 2005 BAYNARD BLVD.,
NEW CASTLE COUNTY

Children & Families First needs to have a corps of friendly, reliable Receptionist/Office Support Volunteers who are available one or more days per week, Monday to Friday, from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. Duties include: front desk, phone/switchboard, greeting visitors and in other departments, filing, copying, data entry, as needed.
Individuals need to be able to relate to persons of all cultures, possess good telephone skills and ability to file accurately.

WORK WITH CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES
One-on-one Truancy Prevention Program Tutors are needed to work with youth ages 10 to 16 years. Volunteers, with the help of Children & Families First staff, establish a relationship with an assigned student to provide homework and/or schoolwork support. The goal is to help enable students to successfully remain in school. Volunteers are asked to meet with students an average/minimum of one to two times per week at a mutually agreed upon public site, such as the student's school, nearest Children & Families First office, public library, etc. An understanding of basic middle or high school subject matter is helpful, as well as sensitivity to and ability to communicate with diverse populations; great patience; consistent availibility; flexibility; and ability to act as a positive role model.

Child Care Assistant is needed for the Strengthening Families Program to support staff working with children by helping watch over and provide activities for children whose family members are participating in this program. This is a one time/week opportunity from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the scheduled evening in a downtown Wilmington location. Abilities required include being able to interact as a positive role model for children; to help plan/provide suitable activities for and relate well with children. It is also important to be able to work as part of a team.

WORK WITH TEENS
A Resource Center for Youth (ARC) is a comprehensive counseling, educational and medical service for teens. Volunteer receptionists are needed during drop-in clinic hours, M-TH each week for 2 ½ to 3 hours. The clinics are located in Wilmington and Claymont and take place during after school hours. Volunteers need to report between 3:00 and 4:00, depending on the day and location of the clinic. Strict confidentiality and reliability are required as well as an interest in working with teens. Orientation and training provided by ARC staff.

HELP REDUCE INFANT MORTALITY
The Resource Mothers program needs a group of volunteers to handle data entry, chart reviews, and transportation of clients to and from medical appointments. This support enables case workers to spend more direct time with clients. A Volunteer Team Leader for this group is also being sought.

OPPORTUNITIES WITH ELDER SERVICES

  • Assist in maintaining accurate information on community Elder Care and Respite Care Services by researching new programs and updating database records. Volunteer for two to three days per week; hours are flexible. Computer experience needed.
  • Design and deliver presentations on Elder Services offered to the community. Days and hours would vary. Experience using PowerPoint and other presentation skills required.
  • Work on advisory committee focused on needs of senior adults. Days and hours would vary.
  • General office assistance: Provide general clerical assistance, answer phones, and data input for 1-2 days per week. Flexible hours.

GENERAL AGENCY OUTREACH
Children & Families First is working to identify and train a group of volunteers who, once knowledgeable about the agency, could work at a booth or table at a community event on an occasional basis. Need individuals who are friendly, possess good communication skills, and have a desire to share about the services we provide. Locations statewide, 2 to 4 hours per event. Orientation, training and materials will be provided by appropriate staff.

GENERAL AGENCY CLERICAL SUPPORT
Volunteers, statewide, are needed to support staff in many Children & Families First departments and programs by performing general clerical and office tasks. This valuable "behind the scenes" assistance is needed statewide, particularly in the Wilmington, Dover,and Georgetown. Hours are negotiable between 9 and 5. Orientation and training are provided by staff.

FACILITIES EVALUATION AND MAINTENANCE PROGRAMMING
Knowledgeable volunteers are being sought to assist our Facilities staff in evaluating and establishing a proactive plan and schedule for regular maintenance at the offices owned by our agency statewide.

HUMAN RESOURCES SUPPORT
Students or interns needed to support our Human Resource Department at our 2005 Baynard Blvd, Wilmington office by assisting in creating/writing a monthly or quarterly newsletter to cover human resources-related topics in order to supplement periodic staff training.

Projects would include:

  • Doing research/gathering material for newsletter
  • Assisting HR Director with Training Committee projects
  • Helping to summarize applicable laws for supervisors (FMLA, etc.)
  • Assisting with accreditation preparation

STUDENT INTERNSHIPS
Internships in several major fields are available within Children & Families First statewide. Throughout the year, consideration is given to candidates who are graduate or undergraduate students in college or university schools of social work, counseling, business administration, accounting, human services, individual, and family and community studies, among others.
